Happy Mother’s Day from Driving and Dining

Well, today is Mother’s day and moms all over the country have enjoyed a lovingly made breakfast in bed, or a delicious Mother’s Day brunch. Churches and restaurants are giving out flowers to visiting moms and special outings and dinners have been planned.

Mother’s Day always falls on a Sunday, and it’s the perfect day for a Sunday drive. Pack all the kids in the car, put on your best Sunday hats, and check out some of these cool roadside attractions:

I Love Lucy

If you’re near Jamestown, NY you could go visit the museum dedicated to one of the funniest moms ever, Lucille Ball. The Lucille Ball Museum pays tribute to a talented businesswoman and gifted comedian who was also a mom in real life (Desi and Lucy Arnaz) but also on TV. If you’re like me you grew up watching Lucy and Ethel’s hijinks – she taught me to go for my dreams, she taught me about the importance of friendship, and she taught me to wear straight-legged pants with ballet flats. All very important lessons that would shape my future.

The attraction doesn’t have a concession but they did recreate the Tropicana room, which can be booked for events. They have meals themed after famous episodes, such as the candy factory episode (serving chocolate mousse of course) and the hilarious grape stomping episode (featuring grape juice and Italian food).

Visit the Waltons

If you’re near Schuyler (pronounced Skyler), Virginia – drop by the Walton’s Mountain Museum which is located right across the street from the TV show creator, Earl Hammer’s, childhood home. (The John-Boy character was based on Earl Hammer.) When I recall this TV show, I always remember the persistant smile of Olivia Walton through the hardships her family faced during the Great Depression and World War II.

No mention of any concession trailer or concession stand there either, but while you’re there you can visit Ike Godsey’s store to buy souvenirs or honey candy, honey, and other down-home style treats.

Bewitched

One of my other favorite TV moms is Samantha from Bewitched. She may have the magical powers of a witch, but she also shares the same magical powers as regular moms: she can heal boo-boos with a kiss, make delicious food appear, create Halloween costumes, make gardens grow, invent games… the list goes on and on. Today’s moms are even more powerful because they often work these types of magic while also working full-time. Yikes.

Check out this statue of Samantha in, you guessed it, Salem Massachusetts.

Happy Mother’s Day!
